Self-Recognition is a baby's awareness of self. This is an important step towards independence.
When a baby realizes that she is a being separate from her mother, a new world opens up to her. She begins to understand that she has needs and wants that differ from those around her. She will eventually realize that she has a say in her world.
Examples of Self-Recognition:
A baby looks in a mirror, sees herself and smiles at the image.
A toddler is getting ready for bed. Her father wants her to brush her teeth, but she doesn't want to. She knows that she has control over this bedtime routine, and makes it quite clear that she doesn't want to participate by repeatedly saying, "No!"
